How to catch pike
Pike are super fun species fish to try and catch. That is because pike are known for being super aggressive hunters and will take almost any opportunity to hunt its prey. Pike tend to love colder waters around 45-70F but will be fine in slightly higher temperatures. Optimal weather for pike is cloudy days with light rain. Pike also thrive directly before a storm comes in. Weather and temperature wise pike dislike direct sunlight, stagnant water, or most forms of hot water. In the environment pike love to hide in weeds or any other form of cover they can find as pike are ambush hunters. That means that they hide out and wait for an opportunity to jump out and attack their prey. Overall dislikes of pike include unclean water, stagnant water, and places with no cover.
The best season to go fishing for pike is in the fall as the water will start cooling down after the summer heat and pike will become more active and aggressive looking to hunt more prey before the winter starts hiding in any cover they can find such as weeds or structures. As pike are extremely aggressive predators for their main food sources they love to eat other kinds of fish. Taking that into account when selecting bait, you may not find as much success with worms, but a minnow or lure in the shape and look of another fish tends to work well. The best trick to use is if you are using a lure in the style of a another fish is to make it appear as if the “fish” being your lure is unsuspecting or slightly injured to make the pike more likely to ambush your lure as the pike would see your lure as easy prey to hunt.
